Verplaas – Song and Dance and Farm Murders

I don’t know much about theater or cabaret. I can’t remember the last time I went to such a production. I do know live music. And cinema. And I would like to think that I know good entertainment when I see it.

This changed when I broke my dry spell last Thursday with the stage production, Verplaas. Verplaas is a cabaret by Loané van Sandwyk, Anja van den Berg and Madelein Joubert. The project stemmed out of the three actresses doing their final practical for their honours degree at the University of Stellenbosch, and went on to sell out shows at US Woordfees and Vryfees this year. Not bad for a debut production.

Less Wes Anderson, more Wes Craven.

The Hellcats - Capital Craft Beer Festival 2016

Cat Piss by Hellcats – Talking beer and rock & roll at Capital Craft

“It’s an incredible event,” Hellcats say, about the annual Capital Craft Beer Festival. “Probably the best beer festival in the country.” They’re on the lineup for this year’s event on 11 June at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens, providing just one part of a wide and eclectic soundtrack to accompany your appreciation of the craft beers on display.

We’ve been to other beer fests where SAB beers are the only thing on sale and Kurt Darren is the headliner, and the organizers wonder why everyone’s blikseming each other at sundown.”

Hellcats is a two piece, stripped down, bare knuckle rock n roll band from Johannesburg. They are Alessandro Benigno on drums and vocals, and Warwick Rautenbach on guitar. And they believe it’s very important to keep the age-old traditional combination of rock & roll and beer alive. “If people didn’t have beer at our gigs, we probably wouldn’t have any fans.”

Citizen Beer

“Made with Honour” – A chat with Citizen Beer

Citizen Beer focuses on delicious, easily drinkable styles, simultaneously educating the drinker and thrilling their taste buds. The brewery started as a hobby in Hout Bay in 2009, but officially launched as ‘Citizen’ in 2012. The four beers they offer are the Patriot light lager, Alliance amber ale, Saboteur English IPA, and Diplomat Czech Pils. We asked them about education, beer, and brewing with honour, ahead of their participation in 2016’s edition of Pretoria’s Capital Craft Beer Festival.

Capital Craft Beer Festival 2016

Capital Craft Beer Festival 2016 – Win Tickets!

The Capital Craft Beer Festival is a well-established annual highlight on Pretoria’s craft beer and live music calendar. And after last year’s great festival (but entrance & queueing problems), they’ve decided to break tradition this year, and move the event to the Pretoria National Botanical Garden. The Capital Craft Beer Festival 2016 will take place this year on Saturday 11 June. As always, it’ll be a great event to experience both new and familiar craft beers, and witness an exciting lineup of music.

Please note that the organisers are very aware of last year’s queueing issues, have resolved to fix this, and “guarantee a quick and easy entry to the festival area” this year.

“Join us at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden when we combine the age-old tradition of drinking beer with new and exciting musical acts and introduce you to a vast variety of local micro-manufactured brews.”

Mieliepop 2016 – what every festival should be

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the term “music festival”? If you’re from Gauteng, it’s most likely dust. And crowds. And drunk youths. But then there’s Mieliepop.

Beforehand, it looked like bad weather might intrude on the weekend. But the sunshine arrived just on time. A simple, 270 km/3 hour drive from Pretoria leads you to the beautiful Tolderia Resort – a real majestic, beautiful, peaceful, green hilly area in the middle of nowhere. The trek into the resort was slightly rough after the rain, and arriving there in the dark isn’t recommended – though that really applies to any festival.

Dan Patlansky launches new album: Introvertigo

Dan Patlanksy is introverted.

That might seem obvious, seeing as his new album is called Introvertigo, but it doesn’t quite gel with being a performing musician and performing in front of thousands of people. “It does seem like a silly career choice if you’re an introvert,” he says, “but I think the whole point of this album is to maybe explain what an introvert actually is.”

Introvertigo is built on songs from the mind of an introvert. “I don’t think any of them are about being an introvert, but it’s almost like the memoirs of an introvert, or the thoughts of an introvert, or the way an introvert sees the world.”
