Citizen Beer focuses on delicious, easily drinkable styles, simultaneously educating the drinker and thrilling their taste buds. The brewery started as a hobby in Hout Bay in 2009, but officially launched as ‘Citizen’ in 2012. The four beers they offer are the Patriot light lager, Alliance amber ale, Saboteur English IPA, and Diplomat Czech Pils. We asked them about education, beer, and brewing with honour, ahead of their participation in 2016’s edition of Pretoria’s Capital Craft Beer Festival.
The Capital Craft Beer Festival is a well-established annual highlight on Pretoria’s craft beer and live music calendar. And after last year’s great festival (but entrance & queueing problems), they’ve decided to break tradition this year, and move the event to the Pretoria National Botanical Garden. The Capital Craft Beer Festival 2016 will take place this year on Saturday 11 June. As always, it’ll be a great event to experience both new and familiar craft beers, and witness an exciting lineup of music.
Please note that the organisers are very aware of last year’s queueing issues, have resolved to fix this, and “guarantee a quick and easy entry to the festival area” this year.
“Join us at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden when we combine the age-old tradition of drinking beer with new and exciting musical acts and introduce you to a vast variety of local micro-manufactured brews.”
“Die liefde is soos ‘n ryp komkommer – vergeet hom in die sakkie dan verlep hy sommer.”

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the term “music festival”? If you’re from Gauteng, it’s most likely dust. And crowds. And drunk youths. But then there’s Mieliepop.
Beforehand, it looked like bad weather might intrude on the weekend. But the sunshine arrived just on time. A simple, 270 km/3 hour drive from Pretoria leads you to the beautiful Tolderia Resort – a real majestic, beautiful, peaceful, green hilly area in the middle of nowhere. The trek into the resort was slightly rough after the rain, and arriving there in the dark isn’t recommended – though that really applies to any festival. Dan Patlanksy is introverted.
That might seem obvious, seeing as his new album is called Introvertigo, but it doesn’t quite gel with being a performing musician and performing in front of thousands of people. “It does seem like a silly career choice if you’re an introvert,” he says, “but I think the whole point of this album is to maybe explain what an introvert actually is.”
Introvertigo is built on songs from the mind of an introvert. “I don’t think any of them are about being an introvert, but it’s almost like the memoirs of an introvert, or the thoughts of an introvert, or the way an introvert sees the world.” Continue reading “Dan Patlansky launches new album: Introvertigo”

What a show.
Mumford and Sons need no introduction. They brought the banjo into modern pop-rock, and cemented their place on the charts with good harmonies, writing, and lyrics. And we’ve all been told excitedly by a teenage girl at a party how the band members can each play all the instruments, ever. We all recognize the opening riff to The Cave, and will automatically sing along to Little Lion Man, albeit without quite hitting all the notes and harmonies. It seems that March is music festival season. In addition to Splashy Fen and Otterlake Easter Festival, and the brand new Lush Festival in Clarens on Easter weekend, Mieliepop has moved from it’s traditional October/November slot to the weekend before Easter in 2016. Monday 21 March is Human Rights day, so it’s already a long weekend, and you can always take 3 leave days to just keep partying from this festival to the next – whichever one you choose!
