Jason Oosthuizen

Q&A: Jason Oosthuizen on playing Led Zeppelin

Jason Oosthuizen, the drummer of Van Coke Kartel and Punk ‘n Roll, has brought together a talented pool of musicians to do a tribute night to Led Zeppelin – on 5 October at The Good Luck Bar. We asked him a few questions about his love for Led Zep, what it takes to put on a tribute show to a legendary rock band, and what we can expect on the night…

Maddy Behrens

Artist Spotlight: Maddy Behrens

Making it in the music industry is hard. In South Africa, even harder. The scene is small, good (paying) venues are scarce, and it takes time and hard work to get on to a festival line-up. Living for the music isn’t free.

Enter Maddy Behrens, a folk/pop musician reminiscent of Gabrielle Aplin and Lisa Mitchell.  The young musician traded her busking corners of KwaZulu-Natal for the hustle and bustle of the big city to pursue a career in music full time. And she’s not losing any momentum. We caught up with her on the cusp of her second Oppikoppi performance. Continue reading “Artist Spotlight: Maddy Behrens”

Introducing Van Pletzen

‘n “Kak lekke vibe” – Van Pletzen kom Oppikoppi toe

Continue reading “‘n “Kak lekke vibe” – Van Pletzen kom Oppikoppi toe”

Blood Brothers 2017: A chat with Loandi Boersma

The cancer-fighting Blood Brothers are returning with the 2017 edition of their annual fund-and-awareness raising concerts. And for the second time, there’s a female “brother” in the mix — so we made sure to ask Cortina Whiplash’ Loandi Boersma a couple of questions about the upcoming show on 30 September… Continue reading “Blood Brothers 2017: A chat with Loandi Boersma”

Kobus de Kock Jnr - Blood Brothers 2017

Blood Brothers 2017: A chat with Kobus de Kock Jnr

Blood Brothers, the annual rock supergroup concert that aims to create cancer awareness among young people by “rocking their hearts out”, is happening on 30 September at the Good Luck Bar in Johannesburg. We managed to talk to Kobus de Kock Jnr, one of the ten musicians in the group, about the event, the campaign, and his experience as a third-timer. aKing

aKing on musical heritage, changing sounds, and the secret to birthday parties

When aKing first debuted in 2008, many people’s first question was about whether they’d have anything in common with Fokofpolisiekar, with whom they shared two members. But almost as soon as the “Fokof spinoff” buzz happened, aKing managed to prove themselves as a fiercly maverick, musically strong act. We asked Hennie van Halen, the group’s bass guitarist, about the band’s journey, and their upcoming show at The Good Luck Bar’s second Birthday party. Go Barefoot Hails on nobody’s parade

Go Barefoot released a music video for their song Hail, and the collaborative project, featuring three groups of dancers in a parallel narrative to that of the song. The exciting song, beautiful choreography and floating camerawork all come together in a tight package that celebrates the chaos of youth, and I couldn’t resist asking Saul Nossel, the group’s drummer, a few questions about it all… Continue reading “Go Barefoot Hails on nobody’s parade”
