Remember Cloverfield? Well JJ Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, who also produced the 2008 found footage monster/disaster film directed by Matt Reeves, released a teaser for 10 Cloverfield Lane on Friday. The teaser was a big surprise, as the general public wasn’t aware of production on any Cloverfield sequel or spin-off. Instead, Bad Robot announced Valencia – a micro-budget horror movie set in a bunker, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman to be directed by relative newcomer Dan Trachtenberg. Trachtenberg has previously directed an impressive video game fanfilm called Portal: No Escape.
A new year brings new films and character to fall in love with. Last year saw innovative pictures come to life. From an entire movie shot in a single take, shooting in the harshest conditions using only natural light, to George Miller’s masterpiece that is Mad Max: Fury Road. With cinema always pushing itself, it’s hard not to get excited about the new ideas coming to screen. So between all the reboots, comic book adaptions and indie features, here’s what I’m most looking forward to seeing in 2016.
Every December, I make a list of my 10 favourite movies of the year. We’ll call it “Top 10 movies of 2015”, but it doesn’t reflect box office performance, critical reception, or public consensus. This is just one person’s recommendation of 10 great films that were released in the past year. Now, counting down to #1 – Floris’ Top 10 movies of 2015:
I don’t know if there’s ever been a movie with higher expectations than Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Okay, maybe The Phantom Menace, but that’s the black sheep of the family we don’t talk about. The pressure to get things right must have been extreme. I’m pretty surprised director JJ Abrams even survived the ordeal.
After months of anticipation, Lucasfilm and Disney finally released the full trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After hints at the plot in two teaser trailers, this final trailer finally reveals… more hints at the plot. I’m very impressed with how, in typical JJ Abrams style, the trailer retains the mystery surrounding the film. It shows a few character moments and a lot of action, but really nothing about the plot.
“Janis was fearless with her pain and with her truth.”
The first trailer for Janis: Little Girl Blue is out. This documentary feature, directed by Amy Berg (of Deliver us from Evil previously), recently debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The biography of Janis Joplin (a troubled and misunderstood rock & roll legend from the 60s) paints a familiar picture to anyone familiar with (the more recent member of the 27 club) Amy Winehouse. The film, which promises to show the human being behind the rock icon, got favourable reviews and generated positive buzz after showing at TIFF, and I can’t wait for a local release.
When Daniel Craig stepped up as the latest in a long line of actors to portray James Bond, it came with a bigger responsibility than usual: Not only were the producers recasting the lead role in their hugely successful film franchise, but they were also rebooting the series. 2006’s Casino Royale, an adaptation of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, explored the character as a younger, more flawed, and less experienced secret agent. It reignited the series, and this year’s Spectre might just be the resultant inferno.
Releasing “Writing’s on the wall”, Sam Smith is now the first British male solo singer of a James Bond theme song since 1965. Stream the song’s debut on Britain’s Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw here.
Writing’s on the Wall was co-written by Smith and fellow Grammy Award winner Jimmy Nape. “It’s the quickest I’ve ever written a song,” says Smith. “It took 20 minutes – and they loved it. I love the song so much.”
Remember Biting Elbows’ Bad Motherfucker music video? Also sometimes sold as a short film called “Insane office escape 2”? Remember Sharlto Copley? Youknow, Wikus van der Merwe from District 9? Remember all those violent first-person shooter video games you love playing? Well, all those things are coming together in a very unique feature action film called Hardcore.
