Albert Frost woke up.
For such a prolific performer, his new album, The Wake Up, comes a surprising seven years after his last solo release, Devils and Gods. And for someone who’s spent 21 years as one of the Blues Broers before quitting the band last year, The Wake Up isn’t quite as bluesy as one might expect. “I’ve been slightly pigeon-holed as a blues guitarist,” Albert Frost explains – which is just how the music business works. But actually, my influences are very wide and range way further than just the blues. And I’ve never had a vehicle to explore that or felt that my voice is ready for this.”
Until now. The Wake Up, while firmly rooted in the blues [“I can’t escape it, I love it so much,” says Frost], is varied, eclectic, and certainly very different. Continue reading “The Wake Up: Albert Frost talks about turning over a new leaf”
What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the term “music festival”? If you’re from Gauteng, it’s most likely dust. And crowds. And drunk youths. But then there’s Mieliepop.
Beforehand, it looked like bad weather might intrude on the weekend. But the sunshine arrived just on time. A simple, 270 km/3 hour drive from Pretoria leads you to the beautiful Tolderia Resort – a real majestic, beautiful, peaceful, green hilly area in the middle of nowhere. The trek into the resort was slightly rough after the rain, and arriving there in the dark isn’t recommended – though that really applies to any festival. It seems that March is music festival season. In addition to Splashy Fen and Otterlake Easter Festival, and the brand new Lush Festival in Clarens on Easter weekend, Mieliepop has moved from it’s traditional October/November slot to the weekend before Easter in 2016. Monday 21 March is Human Rights day, so it’s already a long weekend, and you can always take 3 leave days to just keep partying from this festival to the next – whichever one you choose!
