It’s the job of films to make us feel things. Even better if it’s not things we can usually or easily feel. Like the thrill of running from dinosaurs, or blowing up space stations, or falling in love, or beating the terrorists. Or in the case of A Monster Calls, the pain that often goes with love.
Where The Force Awakens played it safe and acted as a familiar pseudo-rehash of the original Star Wars, this year’s Rogue One (the first of several planned spin-off Star Wars movies) is experimental in all the right ways. But does it have the magic that makes Star Wars special?
A new year brings new films and character to fall in love with. Last year saw innovative pictures come to life. From an entire movie shot in a single take, shooting in the harshest conditions using only natural light, to George Miller’s masterpiece that is Mad Max: Fury Road. With cinema always pushing itself, it’s hard not to get excited about the new ideas coming to screen. So between all the reboots, comic book adaptions and indie features, here’s what I’m most looking forward to seeing in 2016.
