Dan Patlansky is not only a world-renowned blues guitarist; he’s also passionate about sharing knowledge, and getting together with guitar players to escape, play, and learn. Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekends have now become a regular event, and there’s another one coming this weekend.
Dan has just returned from the UK after performing as special guest on Joanne Shaw Taylor’s tour, and now he’s coming to the beautiful winelands in Stellenbosch for a special experience consisting of 3 days of guitar workshops including one-on-one face time with Patlansky himself. All skills levels welcome, and spaces are limited, so be sure to book your place today!
We asked Dan for some more details, like where the idea for these weekends came from:
“I wanted the chance to hang out with 30 other people with the same thing in common: the guitar!”
“It’s also about breeding guitar culture,” he says, “and sharing what I’ve learnt over a long period of time doing this.”
But one thing I’ve always wondered about is their ‘all skill levels welcome’ approach. Dan says that he starts every workshop from the basics through to the advanced, covering everything in between. “I also focus on stuff like feel and phrasing over note choice and technique. So it’s taught from a very different angle.”
And people have definitely gained something from the guitar weekends in the past.
“The best story for me is a young guy called Burger who attended a year as a beginner, and the very next year he returned as the best player on the weekend by far.
“What he did was worked on everything we went through on the weekend and applied into his own playing. He is the flagship student!”
Dan wants to create an environment where people can feel removed from everyday life and solely focus on guitar playing – that’s why he prefers winelands or country locations.
“It also doesn’t hurt being surrounded by the beauty and having the opportunity to play really loud without annoying too many people.”
